Spirit Wasn't Invited to Qualify for BLAST Spring Showdown: the Team Captain Considers the Decision Unfair

Chopper expressed his displeasure with invitations to the qualification.

Spirit's captain Leonid chopper Vyshnyakov expressed dissatisfaction about the team was not invited to the BLAST Premier Spring Showdown qualifiers.

The player and the organization appeal to the HLTV.org rating and say their team is much more experienced than the other qualifiers. Tournament operator Relog invited Cloud9, Eternal Fire, Bad News Eagles, and Aurora.

Chopper's statement

After the announcement of the invited teams, chopper released a large statement about the situation on Twitter.

We were not invited, even though only Cloud9 is higher than us in the rating. When our manager asked the Relog admin about the situation, he replied that they had decided to invite other teams. No disrespect, but the tournament operator leaves us a chance to qualify for one of the most important events of the spring because of... What reason?

Captain of Spirit considers the decision of Relog, which conducts the event, to be as unfair as possible because the team is actually in 14th place on HLTV, which is higher than three of the four invited teams. However, is the HLTV rating important in this matter?

How do tournament operators invite teams to events?

After the appearance of this statement, many people had a question - how do tournament operators invite teams to their events? And it should be said immediately that the HLTV rating is far from the deciding factor.

It is necessary to start with the fact that the team rating is not only in HLTV. Large tournament operators - BLAST and ESL - also have ratings. ESL monitors its events and arranges teams in its table according to their results, and BLAST calculates its rating points for results at majors and tournaments. Therefore, the tables of these maintenance services can differ significantly.

Now let's look at Spirit's position in other team rankings. In the ESL rating, the team is in eighth place, and a lot depends on how the team will show itself at the ESL Pro League Season 17. Speaking of the BLAST rating, there is no Spirit in it because the team is not a partner of the operator, and at IEM Katowice 2023, the team could have shown a better result.

But even these ratings are less important than the second factor - recent results. So let's pay attention to the events that Spirit visited this year. The team participated in the CCT Central Europe Malta Finals and IEM Katowice 2023. And at both events, the team did not even reach the playoffs, while at the CCT Spirit tournament, they lost to Movistar Riders and ENCE.

At the same time, the rest of the invited teams, to whose invitation Spirit has claimed, have already managed to show an excellent game. Eternal Fire became champions of the LAN from CCT, Bad News Eagles lost to them in the finals, and Aurora already made it to the top 2 of CCT tournaments twice, winning one. So these teams' results are clearly better.

Is Relog's decision unfair?

Speaking about the unfairness of Relog's decision, it is worth starting with the fact that the tournament operator has the right to invite those teams that TO itself considers interesting for their events. Yes, it is worth inviting top teams, but this does not mean that the operator should focus on the HLTV rating. And the latest results speak against Spirit, which resulted in the absence of an invite to the qualification. Therefore, the decision cannot be called unfair.
